Is Hip-Hop aktivisme dood? Who is today’s raptivist like yesterday’s Sister Souljah from the 90’s?
Once upon a time when hip-hop was beyond the greed for riches and viral twerk, when hip-hop was a political movement which politically moved men.
I reminisce, I reminisce!
I reminisce about the days when the mic use to be a weapon, when ‘U.N.I.T.Y’ was more than a statement, en
Hear the cries of MICHAEL BROWN, ERIC GARNER, KIMANI GRAY and KENDREC MCDADE. Feel the pain of TIMOTHY RUSSELL, ERVIN JEFFERSON, PATRICK DORISMOND and OUSMANE ZONGO. I mention all these names with pain and anger, but the true question is has the situation changed?
Overseer, Overseer, Overseer, Overseer
Officer, Officer, Officer, Officer!

The officer will pull you over just when he’s pursuing
The overseer had the right to get ill
And if you fought back, the overseer had the right to kill
The officer has the right to arrest
And if you fight back they put a hole in your chest!
(Woop!) They both ride horses
Na 400 jaar, I’ve got no choices! but to wonder,
Is the system not really built for a black man? Or is there a new Rodney King born everyday to die in the same hands of the police?
I genuinely ask, is Hip-Hop activism dead? Who is today’s raptivist like yesterday’s Sister Souljah, Mos-Def, Queen Latifah and others whom we can easily mention from the 90’s?
A person whose heart is invested in fighting social, political and economic issues on and off the microphone? An activist who will put his or her life on the line and match with the people like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X did?
I pray that our generation of hip-hop artist change their focus from “Get rich, die trying” aan “Get Rich while ‘fighting the power’ when necessary”. Ek bedoel “by all means necessary”.
