We have seen Reagan rise from an actor to President, Anold Schwarzenegger terminate his acting career to become governor, and now Michel “Sweet Micky” Martelly has made the transition from pop star to Haitian President. The culture of presidency is changing. It no longer functions in the traditional sense.  Politics and its leaders are no longer adhering to a rigid, fierce structure.

While it might be argued that the transition from fame in the entertainment industry to political popularity is not a difficult one,  they both requires public interest and trust. Entertainers also inevitably face a questioning of their competency and credibility.  Were they elected because they are well liked as entertainers or do they possess the skills and education necessary to run a country and attend to the needs of the people?

Although Martelly’s orijins are not those of your conventional political leader, Haitians have been yearning for change.  They have understandably lost faith in the status quo.  They hope that “Sweet Micky” will bring them the change they so desperately desire and are willing to break conventional norms to ensure that all possible options are explored.  While the extent of Martelly’s success is yet to be measured, the people of Haiti are hopeful that he will live up to his campaign promise and take it “Tet Kale” (all the way).

Who is Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli? Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli was an Italian philosopher, diplomat, writer and humanist in the 15th century who is also credited as one of the Orijinators of modern political science. Many leaders have followed his philosophy in ruling.

Orijinal Question and thoughts?

Niccolo Machiavelli states “It is not titles that honor men, but men that honor titles. “
Question:
Martelly’s win is credited to the masses that voted for him and not the Rich or Highly educated as he hardly approached for his campaign. The people cry for a change, they cry for jobs, they cry for education. What are the first thing that Martelly should try and tackle for Haiti?

Niccolo Machiavelli states “It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both.” “It is much more secure to be feared than to be loved.”
Haiti has and is currently going through serious times right now. Violence has always been in the center of Haiti, and even now with their current situation after the earthquake. Although they have had strong feared leaders in the past, nothing has changed from that aspect. A 47 year old woman, Patrica said “I want security. I want to walk in the street. I never voted before in my life but I voted for Martelly. To see change.” How should Martelly handle violence to bring stability? What persona should he put on to fight against violence, to be loved or to be feared?
